The LMG cable grip is also known as the Little Mule and is a handy little device for pulling, tensioning and gripping uncoated wire ropes and cables.
This device can be used with cable or wire rope that have no coating, they can also be used with metal rods. The rods should have a tensile strength up to 1770 N/mm2 and will be dependant on the diameter and condition of the surface.
The little mule is most commonly used as a manual aid to help with gripping, pulling and tensioning wire rope and cable. The LMG incorporates parallel jaws which will ensure a firm grip on the cable yet will not damage it. Attachment and release is easy and instant thanks to the spring loaded guide, this also prevents the grip from falling off the rope.
There are a few model variations available with pulling forces up to 5000kg. Also the LMG II-X model incorporating grooved jaws. These are most suitable for wire ropes which have a tensile strength of up to 1960 N/mm2 dependant on the diameter and surface condition.
Please note this cable grip should not be used for lifting loads.
Only one cable can be handled at any one time.
Open the clamp /grip by pressing the eye against the pressure force in the direction of the clamp body. Clamp over the wire rope or cable, this must lie centrally in the guide groove over the whole length of the jaws. Releasing the pressure on the eye will cause the eye to retract and close the jaws over the cable with the spring tension making sure it remains attached. The cable can now be tensioned by attaching a rope with a safety hook to the eye of the little mule.
Pulling and tensioning wire rope can be achieved by using a variety of cable pullers. Lifting Gear Direct has a great range of suitable equipment to work with cables and wire ropes. Our collection includes economy cable pullers, Yale cable pullers and Tirfor winches all available in a choice of pulling capacities. They are all portable devices although not quite as compact as the LMG cable puller.
Always remember to check out all equipment prior to carrying out your task to ensure there are no defects and is safe to use. Thorough inspections must be carried out on this type of equipment on a regular basis to comply with LOLER regulations.
